Gay man here. It's honestly kind of ridiculous how often girls seem to think that ALL COUPLES SWITCH, ALWAYS, YOU HOMOPHOBE

Like... sure, there are some switches. But there's a tonnnnnnnn of dudes that are either one way or the other. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's not unrealistic for a pairing to be written almost exclusively one way.

It's honestly kind of ridiculous that you're overlooking the fact that this is about fictional characters, in a fictional context, doubtless written with differing characterisations, by different people and that IRL rules might not apply.

I am a het, female slash reader. I don't write much, because I'm very lazy, but I still imagine outlines of fics I my head all the time.

Honestly, I think in a semi-unconscious way, I kind of glom onto the idea of switching as an easy way to assure myself that I'm not heterosexist. It's like this shortcut to get the worry of being heterosexist out of the way. If my ship switches, then it can't be a heterosexist version of a gay relationship...right? (Yeah, I know that's not actually true.)

I mean, it's honestly true that I like the thought of my OTP switching it up occasionally. It's something I can't do with a partner (pegging isn't quite the same thing) and I think it'd be really nice to have that option. But what really stands out to me is the feeling I get when I read a fic where my OTP doesn't switch at all. The feeling I get is vague discomfort for enjoying it. Because in my mind I worry I'm being heterosexist. Not so much because they don't switch at all - but because usually the character with the more stereotypically "feminine" traits is bottoming AND they don't switch at all.

So basically my brain thinks, "It's important that they switch in order to mitigate the fact that one of the characters is being depicted as having more stereotypically 'feminine' traits, and that character bottoms more."

For the record, I don't, in any way shape or form, think het relationships are superior to gay ones. It's possible that my taste in smut is a little bit heterosexist. But my values and opinions are not - or at least not so far as I can tell.

Also, though I may sometimes feel a little bit weird about how women write porn about gay men (and how much I like the tropes we use) - I do not question how gay men write porn about gay men. It's their business, not mine, they know the terrain, I don't, and I respect that.

1) This is fanFICTION, not real life.
2) This is about FICTIONAL relationships, not real life relationships.
3) Who's top and who's bottom is surely a matter of interpretation and how one decides to write the character and there's absolutely nothing wrong with different writers having different takes on the canon and on the characters.

FFS, what is wrong with people on FS tonight...

Fiction often reflects the biases of the author, so if your entire body of work just happens to rehash the same stereotypes that have been ubiquitous in mass media and used to justify other forms of homophobic violence and discrimination, I'm entitled to my free eye roll.

NAYRT

I agree with where you're coming from, but I think the most important thing is, whatever you're going to do, try to do it in a critical, thoughtful way and be aware of the stereotypes and the fact that they're not real, they're - at most - ideas you're playing with.

And, tbh, part of that is not getting superdefensive about how it's fanfiction so you should just be allowed to do whatever whenever and not deal with the rest of it. Unleash the id, but don't completely disengage the rational mind.

I agree with this. Also, I thought your original comment was entirely fair and reasonable, so I'm not sure what's up with people getting all hostile with you.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody's being hostile. Calm down.

+1
Peoples responses to your comment are like, wow, calm your defensiveness.

Geez people sure seemed to take your comment badly. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your opinion. As a writer it was interesting to hear that. I'd unconsciously fallen into a rut where I felt like every couple had to switch it up all the time.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gay, too, and I rarely see girls/women or fanfic writers think all couples switch. So??????

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Also gay and sure - not many switch and I mainly do not and hell - would fit stereotypes but in literature it creeps me out, however, any power dynamics creep me out in media or written works. I assume it is due to me growing up in quite horrid place and just not my thing. Whiiiich is what I assume happens with others not into that in media or just want variety as in "all porn scenes read same". Also your comment is ... first time I hear that sentiment as usually heard opposite of 'some always are bottom, you homophobe!'. Eh. Each to their own.
