I wouldn't call it edgy superior atheist. Dawkins Pullman is not. I think HDM is anti-establishment more than anything else. Pullman has long-standing and legitimate beef with Vatican corruption and institutionalised abuse, which is fair enough.

The problem is that he’s as subtle as a neon yellow sledgehammer and it’s tiresome. It’s like if every Narnia book was written like The Last Battle, with the added benefit of having a completely unlikeable main character.

You found Lyra unlikeable? YMMV I guess. I thought she was refreshingly different. I liked the fact that she was a messy and sometimes morally grey, as children usually are.

Messy and morally gray wasn’t the problem. Bratty, selfish and generally unpleasant was. Obviously, your mileage does vary, and it is true that the world is full of selfish brats.

I agree with your description, but I also think that was intentional and done for a purpose. I freely admit I'm a Pullman fan though, so I expect I'm biased. Of course, if something doesn't work for you it just doesn't work.
