It used to bother me and then I realized that no matter how much they love each other they might get tired of each other after, say, 250 years or so. I guess I'm just cynical. But I'll admit I don't write stories where the immortal/long-lived love interest moves on with someone else.

I feel like that's the ONLY thing I liked about Only Lovers Left Alive (I mean besides Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston being pretty). The idea that they're married, and forever-in-love, and that she was ready to drop everything to come see him, but that they were content to spend time apart too.

I love the idea of immortal characters being together for a super long time and, like, they definitely aren't together all the time, and they have flings with other people, and they fight, and they know each other perfectly including all their flaws and they're frequently tired and annoyed with each other, but at the end of the day they're still actual True Loves with each other. I loooooove that very specific thing.

Yes! That's much easier to swallow than 'joined at the hip for 500 years'.
