Now I'm imagining a Harry Potter AU that involves Dumbledore being a prison warden and the heads of houses being guards.

Gryffindor are the people who got drunk/mad and got in fights and killed people, Ravenclaw are the hackers and white collar criminals, Slytherin is a mix of con men and corrupt priests and politicians, and Hufflepuff is very confused

Hufflepuff are the people who got 20 year sentences for non-violent drug offenses.

I'd read the shit out of this AU

Same! I want this AU so bad now.

Hufflepuff are a 50/50 split between gang members and people who were accessories to the other houses' crimes.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-13 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
Now that seems very interesting~!

Would it make more sense if people just called an Orange Is The New Black AU? Or maybe there's some Papillon AUs as well, I don't know, I'm not a student of the genre.

I wish there were more...What fandoms have a lot of them?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-11 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. I sometimes get a craving for them and even have fandoms where I think it might fit but there never seem to be any...

I've read a few in the Hannibal fandom. I'm sure there's more that I skipped.

Of course for the Hannibal fandom writing a prison AU doesn't have to be terribly AU at all. It's not much of a stretch to jump to 'what if they got caught, and got sent to prison rather than to a psych ward'

I mean, Prison Break shouldn't count but there are actually a lot of aus that are set in different prisons.

XMFC has a surprising amount of prison aus, including an amazing one where they're split between prisoners and guards on a prison transport spaceship.

My guess would be Oz. It's a pretty heavy show. Though it has a canon gay ship!

I haven't watched Oz in so long. Used to really like that show.
popkin16: (that fleece tho)

I never did see all of it... From what I can tell, it still has a dedicated, active following!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-11 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What don't you like about them, OP?

I like some of the things that are usually in them. Angst, violence, loyalty, etc.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-11 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not my cup of tea either. The only way I like them at all is if they subvert all the standard prison stuff. So like, my OTP both have to be good guys. Maybe one is falsely accused and one is undercover or something? And no rape. And no dubcony "prison wife" stuff, where it's like, "I want you, but even if I didn't I couldn't say no because I need you to protect me."

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I have ever seen a prison AU in any of my fandoms. I'm not surprised to hear they exist, but they're hardly overwhelming. Seems like it's be easy enough to disregard.

Yeah, I'm not really into them either. I mean - people are in prison either for committing a horrible crime (rape, murder, etc.), or in prison for committing a crime that's not a big deal, but they're there because (at least in the US) the legal system sucks balls (jailed for having pot, jailed for being too poor to pay fines, over-zealous, racist cops trumping up charges)...or they are innocent and falsely imprisoned.

The first option doesn't make me want to read about the character, the second two are depressing.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Nine times out of ten it's for the prison rape, situational homosexuality, and/or angst. It's not exactly a mystery for the ages.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-13 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends on the fandom.
I can't say I've found too many prison AU fics where canon doesn't give some kind of baseboard to jump off from... but that being said, I've tried to watch Oz-;; and I know certain prison fics/aka shows can go very wrong, very quickly...;;

I have a soft spot for AU's, so I guess I really wish more people would write prison AU's with more substance, rather than drama;;
