I like Meg Ryan, but I don't think she could've pulled off the gradual transition from annoyingly-OTT sugar-sweet caricature to admirably optimistic and tenacious real person as well as Amy Adams did. And that seamless transition is such an integral part of the movie.

You're probably right though. Back in the day, Meg would've been the go-to for a role like that.
