130. It used to kind of blow my mind how many different pairings and how much ship-related wank seems to center around Mohinder, given that he, in my opinion, is far and away THE MOST BORING CHARACTER ON THE SHOW. But now I wonder if maybe that's the point - that maybe, because he's so blah onscreen, people feel like they can easily mold him and insert him into whatever role they want opposite whatever character they want in order to fulfill their own fandom fantasies.

139. Aww. I love this secret.

142. Thank you for saying this. So many people don't seem to get that having a social life is not the be all, end all of human existence. And that not every unsocial person is a loser who lives in his/her parents' basement shoveling down Cheetos.

143. If it's wank you want, I think you'll be disappointed if/when it happens. Sure, there'll definitely be some from the people who shriek "OMG RACISM!!11!one!12" at every single move Kring makes, but mostly there'll just be a cry of delirious resounding joy from the fandom as a whole. (Also? That's kind of a pathetic reason for wanting a character to die.)

146. I'm hoping this is a troll, but if not, I hope you enjoy your prison time. Particularly the part where you get raped by all the guys bigger than you.

167. Yeah, you're real devout, I can tell. I can just feel the devoutness oozing from this secret.

I adore him, personally, but yes, that's also how I feel when reading fic about him. (Or felt. I gave up and stopped reading.) It's interesting, because I also always wondered why there were so many ships with him when he alone, as a character, has never been particularly popular. If by "interesting" you mean "stop fucking using him as a tool for your porn when you clearly don't give two shits about him".

Oh woe.

130: Reasons why Mohinder is the fandom's bicycle:
1. He is pretty.
2. He has met almost all of the other characters, and if he hasn't yet, it's not that difficult to make up a way for them to meet.
3. I refer you to 1.

Really, I think it's mostly that he's pretty rather than that he's moldable.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-01 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that your points are big reasons, but when people start writing him in fic based on those two things alone, at least as a result, he's molded to fit any odd fancy the author has and any random character the fic's plot needs. Even if the writer doesn't intend to come of as not caring, if he/she doesn't really care beyond those two reasons? It's pretty much the same thing.

Pfff, writing a character the way they would behave in canon takes effort, and some fanfic writers can't be bothered with that. It gets in the way of all their smutfic.

It's a case of trying to find out who the good writers are and trying to ignore the rest.

Re: 130

Yes because fanfic is Serious Business.

Re: 130

(Anonymous) 2008-09-01 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's not Srs Bsns, but it's serious enough in my opinion that I'm not going to waste time reading a fic in which the characters are drastically OOC. Because if they're OOC, then it's not believable, and then what's the point, really?

Re: 130

(Anonymous) 2008-09-01 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Then don't waste your time and don't sweat it when others do. Some of us like to have fun with it. *horror*

Re: 130

(Anonymous) 2008-09-01 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
*facepalm* That's just the point, I don't waste my time with the bad, OOC fic. I weed around through the crap and find the good stuff. And I really, really don't understand the mindset that it's apparently impossible to have fun writing fic and simultaneously make it halfway decent and keep everyone in character. I certainly have fun writing, but I do my best to keep everyone IC as well. The two are not mutually exclusive.

It's okay, step away. You're talking to the brick wall that is 98% of mylar_fic. Badfic is goodfic! War is peace! Mylar is fluff! It's their religion, you won't convince them otherwise easily.

Yes, that's exactly what I said, well done.

But... but what if I've come to the conclusion they all suck?!

(Anonymous) 2008-09-01 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Yep, that's definitely a big part of it as well.

Oh yes. I firmly believe that that is one of the main reasons, if not THE main reason, that Mylar exists. "Oooh, Sylar's hot, Mohinder's hot, let's imagine them getting together and having super hawt angsty hawt violent buttsex!!1"

Last I checked there was a slight difference between trolling and speaking the truth.

Speaking as someone who's fond of Mohinder, but doesn't hang out in fandom: I like him because he's a completely normal guy flung into a not-normal situation. Mohinder doesn't have powers like everyone else, but he still plays an important role in the series and is an interesting character. He still has neat interactions with others -- Matt, Molly, and yes, even Sylar -- and he has his own personal hangups about his father and sister. He's still a very deep character without needing powers to be as such.

I don't read Heroes fic, period, so maybe you're right there, though. I wouldn't know.
