(Anonymous) 2008-09-01 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)Odd, that, seeing as though the Bible is pretty clear about Christ's stance on homosexuality. Seems strange that one would claim to follow Christ, yet disagree with him on homosexuality. But I guess humans do have a nagging tendency to want to do things their own way.

Anti-homosexual remarks were all written by men not repeating the words of Jesus or God. As far as following what Christ said about homosexuals, he never said anything himself.
The Bible itself doesn't exactly have any overall stance in the first place. The entire Bible doesn't provide much information for views on homosexuality cause at the time it wasn't a case of it actually being a sexual orientation or two men loving each other, but more of a case of same-sex interactions that came out of not real love, but as expolitation and lust.
There are maybe like, five texts that talk about two guys sleeping with each other and in each of them they refer to something other than the act or actual morality of it (rejecting Jewish identity because gay sex was a Canaanite thing to do, inhospitality and abusive behaviour, etc). A lot of it is also based on old, sexist ideas which should've been done away with by the time Jesus came around and started preaching everyone as equals (obvious teaching everyone seems to forget and/or ignore) For instance, in Leviticus the main idea was that you couldn't treat a man as you could a woman, because back then they figured that only men were made in the image of God, and also so they could be different from the people around them.
More or less, you can take it as the Bible not wanting two guys (who are not in love) to go have sex just cause they're feeling horny. But they wouldn't want a man and a woman or two women to do the same. The point is not to be gay or not to be gay, but it's that we don't abandon ourself to lust and a over-all respect to this sex shebang.

there's a reason why there's so many different branches of Chrisitanity, and that's because there are different ways of interpreting what's being said in the Bible.
