Count me as another new fan you must be driven mad by. I don't know what I we new fen did that was so awful, but if you honestly can't stand the fandom as it is now... GTFO.

Or are you one of those elitist snobs who hide away in your special "must be a friend of a member to even lurk" comms?

Either way, you aren't much missed. I'm having great fun, and I love the fandom as it is now, and I'm glad you're not in if you can't even man up and say what's so bad about the fandom other than the fact that OMG NEW PEOPLE JOINED!

I'm not actually a member of any of the comms. I was for a bit, and was actually active.

I don't care about new fans coming into MY fandoms. I'm not elitist about that sort of thing. Fandom doesn't belong to me. It doesn't owe me anything.

Things that are different and hard to deal with? The fanfic and general slash. Not only have the soldiers themselves been active in the fandom, but so have family members of the actors. When the fandom started, they used to join communities and read the posts. They replied to people, sent e-mails to fans. I hope they still aren't reading these things. I can't imagine how they would react.

Also, I've encountered a lot of self-proclaimed historians who act superior because they think they know so much more about BoB and war history. Except that most of them are wrong half of the time. And I don't think you have to know these things to enjoy BoB. I think you don't have the right to be a pompous ass about that knowledge, especially when you don't actually know anything.

See... My problem with the newer people I've encountered is the same problem you have with the person you perceive me to be. BoB fandom was never as elitist as it is now.

Never claimed to be a great historian, so meh. I can't tell you if I've met anyone like that either. Don't get around too much.

I'm not sure how my opinion of the fandom should have the power to ruin it for you. If you enjoy it, you should enjoy it.

I'm sorry. Genuinely... I didn't intend to ruin a fandom you are happy in for you. And if you haven't encountered the things I have, I'd hope that you could still be happy.

I do admit that making such a general "I hate all new fans" statement was problematic. There are probably plenty of newer fans worth knowing.

What can I say? I'm easily bothered by the idea that the actual people could potentially find out some of the stuff I've written/made. Not your fault. :|

I ended up leaving another fandom for similar reasons. I think I should just stay out of fandoms that involve real people. --;;;;

I've seen that in a few fandoms. I run a fansite for someone in one of my fandoms now and he e-mailed me a compliment about it. Later, he e-mailed me again and asked "What is the LiveJournal? I keep seeing Google Alerts to these stories there." I didn't know what to say. It freaked me out a bit.

Maybe it's the idea of fandoms based on real people. I don't know.

Early on in BoB fandom, James Madio's mom was on every messageboard I joined. And a girl I knew ended up working on a project with Rick Warden, after seeing him on a messageboard. Guarnere e-mailed a few people I knew, just because he appreciated things they had said about him. I think it can be okay to have these people around, but it scares me at the same time.
