Saving fanfic

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you save fic to your hard rive? What's your criteria for what gets saved and what doesn't?

I save them to my google docs.

In retrospect I *should* see if some are still up on old wikias and save them.

If it's good enough for me to read it until the end, it gets saved. I usually save as .txt, and will download longfic off AO3 for my e-reader.

This is my criteria too!

I've been in fandom long enough that I've tried to go back to old fandoms only to find out that almost all of the fic has been taken down. So, I don't take any chances nowadays. If I read it and thought it was okay, I save it.

I've been in fandom long enough that I've tried to go back to old fandoms only to find out that almost all of the fic has been taken down.

I think that's mostly just a lucky byproduct in my case. Thinking back, I'm pretty sure I started saving because I had hand-me-down W95 computer, while the family computer was online. I'd save fic on floppies so that I could read store them and re-read them on my own computer without having to upset my parents with the phone bill.

Jesus, I'm old.

I save it if it left me feeling a certain way I want to experience again. Happy, if it's fluffy. Or maybe it ties up something in canon that was never explained or finished in a satisfying way. Or if a novel length fic kept my interest the whole way through.

Yes. I have about 1100 fics saved. If they are good enough for me to bookmark and are not just short one shots, they get saved.

No, but I really should. So many fics have ready been lost to the internet :(

Nope. Occasionally I'll bookmark something on AO3 but I don't know if I've ever gone back and reread them.

Most fic isn't memorable enough to me to keep.

Sometimes yeah, if it scratches a particular itch or I think it's fun enough to re-read I'll save it.

No. I bookmark things but nothing more. The idea gives me a weird feeling. Not sure I can explain why.

I only save fics I really love and want to reread. which usually means either a great porny fic or a great, really long action fic. I download the PDFs from AO3, which is pretty easy to do.

I save every fic I like. Flouncers can go to hell.

Oh definitely, except that I back them up on flash drives and disks as well in case of Computer Disaster. There's fic files dating back 20 years on my current computer. I'm a terrible digital packrat.

Basically, if I really like it, I keep it. I also print out favorite fics that I've found in my much-beloved (and mostly-dead) main fandom. I've got them in a binder that, horrifyingly, weighs about 9 lbs.

Yes. If I like a fic and think I'll want to read it again someday, I save it. Or if it's a long fic that sounds interesting, but that I don't have any time to read right then, I save it to put on my Kindle and read later.

I read 99% of fic on my iPod, so I often save fics I adore to ebooks, courtesy of ao3;;
Before that though- I often saved things I really liked on doc. When I was about to go on vacation/visit where I knew I wouldn't have internet, I'd save a few multi-chapter fics from a few authors I knew and loved.
Otherwise, I'll save fics on note, or by e-mail;;

My criteria usually has to do with the off chance I find a rare-pair I really like, characterization, or when I become obsessed with a certain special something I find in one fic or another...
