Virtue Signaling

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the most egregious example of virtue signaling you've ever come across?

Doesn't have to be in fandom, could be in real life or celebrities or whatever

Re: Virtue Signaling

My current fandom is a small fandom with only one main group space. A couple of years back the bnf of the fandom declared slash pairings immoral because none of the characters are 'canonically gay'. Everyone who didn't fall in line with this got shouted out of the fandom and all the slashers left to save themselves from being doxxed.

Fandom has never been perfect but FUCK THIS witch hunt, purity culture, faux moral outrage bullshit that's going on these days. I miss old school fandom. Hell zines were better than this.

I'm surprised fandoms still exist where anti-slash is considered a 'virtue'

Ikr? It's a kid show. Apparently this justifies it, even though the bnf writes het fic.

"anal sex in a fic for a kids show?! we can't have this"
"it's okay, it's a female-presenting anus"
"ah, carry on then"

That sounds batshit. I'm surprised there are fandom spaces where you can be proudly anti-slash and not get attacked at by the tumblr hivemind.

It's not on Tumblr. It's kinda old school in that it's shut off from outside influences and the bnf (s) rule the roost.

Also the controversy over the MLP Friendship is magic fandom happened shortly beforehand.

I'm not defending these people, just I think there were a few factors that added up as well as their blatant homophobia.

I was following fan accounts for MCU on Twitter for about a month. I thought they posted funny or cute things but some of the accounts would tell their followers things like, "Don't follow [x] because they ship Thor/Loki. Incest is gross!" Then the James Gunn thing happened and some of them began harassing Dave Bautista and drew lines in the sand if you didn't immediately condemn James Gunn. It was a short glimpse into the MCU fandom and I've returned to not being in the fandom aside from watching people review the movies on YT.

My area has one of those facebook groups where anyone can post. It's bad. Lots of pictures of people and cars with stories about how they "caught" the person doing something horrible and "called them out".

So you harassed a stranger because you have declared yourself the moral authority? Lovely.

I mean, I guess it depends what they caught them doing/called them out on? "Hey I caught this guy running over a cat on purpose!" is a bit different from, "Oh my god this person had the audacity to park in the 'parent+child' parking spot at Wal-Mart and they had no kid!!"

There's one for my neighborhood that I've never checked out, but a neighbor told me about a post where someone complained about a school bus driver taking "too many" kid's books from a Little Free Library, and someone suggested she was going to sell them for money for drugs, because that's totally plausible.

LOL...someone sure has some optimistic misconceptions about how lucrative the second hand book market is...

I wonder if I've ever ended up posted about on nextdoor or whatever because I go for long rambling walks late at night around my neighborhood and have gotten some really weird reactions when dog-walkers or people going from their cars to their front doors realize I'm not walking a dog. I love dogs, but my cat would hate it (and me) if I got one. I wonder if they think I'm casing their houses or something?

Nah.

Whenever a person with a type of privilege calls people with the same type of privilege disgusting, trash, whatever. Usually accompanying a news piece about one of them being a piece of trash. Men/white people, it's perfectly fine and good to comment on sexism/racism without throwing in a "Sorry we men/white people are such trash..."

Ooh yes, I hate this so much. You're not helping, you're bringing the attention back to YOU and how YOUR demographic "sucks" as opposed to having the focus being on the people you want to help.

Most of it is kinda same old same old. You see enough of it and it all just kinda blurs into one.

They do kinda fall into types, tho. The weirdest /type/ of virtue signal is the "I'm so virtuous that I've raised my 3 year old to be able to give lectures on gender studies in universities" That always strikes me a bizarre and egregious. But even THAT is too common to pin point a specific example.

If I had to point out one single example, the only one of this type that I've seen stand out is on the right. The lady with the bikini and the guns. the "I love showing my tits and shooting my gun to own the libs" lady. She is sorta one-of-a-kind in the virtue signal parade you get on twitter.

I think the perfect example of virtue signaling was Trump's moment with the rainbow flag. Similarly "The Wall" aka Trump's Dick is just a symbolic moment to show that Trump is tough on immigration policy and will never actually get built.
