Re: New Shows

I watched the first episode and found it really uncomfortable, but I think that's deliberate? I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet.

The main character Joe is very handsome and outwardly charming. Plus, he's portrayed as having some very positive, genuine character traits, such as being extremely kind and nurturing to children. But he's also an obsessive stalker who has no morals or boundaries when it comes to what he'll do "for" the object of his obsession.

The show is very clear, from the start, that Badgley's character is not just creepy, but dangerous and terrifying. But at the same time, a big part of the show is how it plays with your perceptions of him, doing everything it can to make him appealing to the viewer in some respects, while simultaneously making it clear that, yeah, he's a psycho.

Basically, the show is a deliberate mindfuck. The irreconcilable interplay between Joe's attractive qualities and his monstrous qualities is at the heart of the narrative tension.

That description reminds me of the J-Drama Last Friends.

Like, the show goes through the effort of showing you that the main guy isn't EVIL (he's a social worker who cares about kids ffs), but he's also very fucked up too.
