You can look into prepaid/month to month plans (Boost Mobile, Straight Talk, etc.). I have my cellphone with unlimited 4GLTE, unlimited talk and text, and it's only $65/month. Cheaper if you want less.
In my experience, AT&T can make some good offers but connection can suck and once a contract is up they charge a lot, Verizon has great connection but it's expensive, T-Mobile has good connection but their plan options kind of suck, and Sprint is OK but connection can suck depending where you live.

IMO if you have your own phone don't get service with a contract. Month to month is easier.
