How do I make myself clean my home? I can’t bring myself to do it because it will just get messy again and that discourages me so much, the fact that I can’t do it permanently. How do I just do it? How is that even hard? How is folding some clothes and recycling some empty boxes a hard thing?

I'm there with you. For me, I have to be doing it for someone else. It is easier to do it now that I have a cat because while I won't clean for myself, I will clean to make things better for her.

One thing I'd suggest is a reward system for yourself. Do a little, give yourself a small reward. Do some more, another reward.

Do it in short bursts, say 15 minutes at a time. But do the 15 minutes regularly every day and reward yourself with something fun ONLY when the task is completed.

I'm not a very motivated cleaner either but this is what helped me.

You can aim for neat and tidy with a reasonable standard of cleanliness. You live there, so you will maybe have a dish in the sink or some hairs in the bathroom every day, but if you have company it will take you very little time to tidy the daily mess if you're already at a good standard.

Fold clothes while you watch tv or listen to music. Clean during ad breaks or between episodes or songs. Just pick a thing that you can see needs doing like clearing off your dresser and wiping it with a dust cloth. It will take five minutes and you won't be overwhelmed. If you do a couple of these every day your place won't have mess.

If everything has a place, you know where to put it and tidying is easier. Put everything where you use it, and make sure you can see it as soon as you open a cupboard or drawer.

Do basics once a week like the bathroom, kitchen, floors, and changing over sheets and towels. Even if something looks fairly clean, doing it often will mean it won't be a difficult cleaning job that involves scrubbing for ages.

Keeping everything clean and tidy is easier if you're not a hoarder so go through your stuff and get rid of some every so often.

This. It's a lot easier to do a task or two at a time than it is to try to clean ALL THE THINGS at once. For example, I mopped the bathroom floor today because I noticed it was starting to look a little bit grungy. Tomorrow I'll probably vacuum because I tracked in a bunch of salt and other gunk when I came inside from work today. If you do just one or two little things daily, then it never builds up to the point where cleaning is a huge struggle.

Lots of helpful advice on this blog. http://unfuckyourhabitat.tumblr.com/

Two points that got me started:
Make your bed. It takes approx 90 seconds and creates an island of tidiness that slowly spreads through your home.
20/10 cleaning sessions. 20 minutes' cleaning, 10 minutes' rest. Don't overrun on the cleaning.

Good luck! You can do it!
