Maybe a "Thanks, but that wasn't really my point. I'm not fishing for sympathy, this is who I am and it makes me feel weird that people pity me for it"?

Or maybe ask questions in your posts, because often people feel like they need to respond, but don't know what to say and expressing sympathy is rarely inappropriate.

Yes, this! I used to use this tactic on LJ when I posted about awkward stuff. Sympathy comments really bugged me, so I always ended my posts with some random question to my flist.
