(Anonymous) 2008-09-02 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)BUT the fact that the regular and voiced consonants are used in deciding these, some of which never occur in the Japanese language (To the best of my knowledge, although my Japanese isn't GREAT, "pa" is never used as an alternate pronunciation of ha in actual Japanese), AND throw random English numbers too? All instead of simply typing Basil or Spanner? It seems too much.
If fandom is going to mock people for learning Japanese for their fandoms, and then require they learn both on and kun numbering systems, AND the quirks of the syllabary (voiced/unvoiced consonants) just to find their favored characters and/or ships, well...there's a bit of a problem.

Spanner and Basil are from the romanization of their names: Supana and Bajiru.
And note that it was the Japanese who came up with these numbers as well.

ぱ <-- yes, there is. It's ha/ba/pa. So for ji is an alternate pronounication for shi (thus why Basil is 84). But that number is pretty old.
Besides, like I said before, only 12 or so people have a number because their name fits it.
