Re: re: 135
(Anonymous) 2008-09-03 06:35 am (UTC)(link)I've gotten used to it, but I have three years of Japanese under my belt.
Although I'm still not sure why Yamamoto is 80. I assume the 8 comes from Ya, but where exactly in Ma, Mo, To, Ta, Ka, or Shi do you get 0? He never seems to be included in the aforementioned FAQs, either. He's just listed and you're supposed to take it on faith. Or something. But he exists as such on all sides of the ocean, so maybe I'm missing something.
I agree with the OC that a fandom cannot simultaneously expect its members to learn Japanese in order to locate their respective interests, and flame them for learning Japanese simply because they like anime (quite frankly, I think the latter is stupid ANYWAY, but that's not the point).
Furthermore, most of them appear to be fabrications of the English-speaking fandom being a random. In 3 years of hanging about in both the English and Japanese fandoms, I have only run across one or two instances of anything except the "original" 27, 80, 59, 69, 96 and 18 in the Japanese. So unless the true bilinguals have a vendetta against the English fandom and/or a superiority complex (not all of them), most of these are completely random fabrications anyway. I am going to assume that the 32 I saw for Xanxus (apparently Xan=San=3 and Xu=Tsu=(hu)TSU was an isolated occurance. Otherwise I shall lose all faith.
I agree with the secret poster. I think it's a bit silly. Even though I do tend to type 8059 or YamaGoku instead of Yamamoto/Gokudera, or 2750 or GokuTsu instead of Gokudera/Tsuna.
...As for PoT, I'm STILL not entirely sure how the canon name of the Golden Pair managed to spawn something that needs a dictionary. But I think I've given up. If I don't recognize the pairing, I just click and look for character names, and hope desperately it's not something like Dan/Kabaji.
Re: re: 135
I've personally seen Japanese websites and fanart use 84 for Basil, 38 for Spanner (although the English fandom use 48, the number that the Chinese fandom uses) and 100 for Byakuran. Only 51 for Shouichi is completely made up for the English fandom and based on a pun on his name I know for sure. And maybe be Haru and Hana, but that's not certain at all.
But I feel complaining about the numbers is useless when there's a short and easy guide for it. Like I said eariler, there are plenty of fans who don't know a lick of Japanese and got it when they read the guide. And the guide is made to be very clear and easy to the what and why these numbers are used.
I feel that the OP was over-exaggerating that it's getting more difficult than the PoT pairing names because 1) the number is designated to a character only 2) when there's a fic of some pairing, people use the number or first initial (if that person doesn't have a number). In PoT, it become a totally different game together like the Golden Pair, the Silver Pair, the Dirty Pair, the Thrill Pair and etc. That takes a lot more commitment to memorize that.
