Hence the operative word “many”. I even thought of adding a disclaimer before a drove of people rushing in with NU-UH I HATED HIM IN HIGH SCHOOL. You aren’t special for hating Holden as a teen. But that doesn’t discount the many others *who* did relate to him especially given the time period and context the book was released in a post WW2 society when there was no such thing a Young Adult literature. Of course modern readers dislike him. His problems are small beans compared to up to 30 years ago and he’s not supposed to be likable so congrats on fulfilling authorial intent.
