What weird fears do you have?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Or phobias.

I don't know if this counts, but... I really get stressed out going somewhere new, but at the same time, I get stressed out if I go somewhere often enough that the employees recognize me, like they're somehow judging me for being there enough that they know me. Even if it's something as innocuous as a grocery store.

Frogs's legs and skin. Quite a hindrance when you study biology and cannot dissect one because it's unbearably disgusting to you.

I am terrified that one day I am going to open a door and there will be a killer on the other side. I also hate looking thru a window at night. One day...one day there will be a serial killer there.

You know how when you go to some kind of meeting or presentation or lecture and someone is giving a powerpoint presentation or sjowing something on their computer, and there's that moment when they're getting their computer hooked up to thge projector and you can see their desktop? Well, I would find it really embarrassing if my desktop were really cluttered and everyone saw it projected on a huge screen. I (irrationality) fear being one of those people whose desktop is SOLID ICONS AND DOCUMENTS.

I keep both my personal and work laptop desktops really spartan just in case I am asked to give a spontaneous powerpoint presentation (which has never happened, but you never know...)

Heights isn't weird. But what is weird is my fear of airplanes flipping. When I'm in a plane, my vertigo and height issues mean that my biggest fear isn't crashing, its the plan flipping over when it is turning.

One of my jobs involves interpreting and I'm always afraid I'm gonna somehow forget to speak one or both languages.

Escalators that go down. I spend the whole time I am on them convinced I will be tilted forward and eaten by it and die. But I am fine with them going up.

I used to have a spider phobia but I got over that.

Now...my anxiety cases a lot of fears but I know they are not phobias and when my meds settle they won't bother me. I mean right now I am terrified if someone knocks on the door or phones me but that will fade.

I think I'm more freaked out by unknown dogs than most people are. If a dog comes towards me and it seems less than 100% friendly, I get fearful. It really bothers me that a lot of dog owners don't get this and are super chill about letting their dogs come at you. Like, they just expect you to trust that their dog is not going to bite you. At the very least people should always say, "It's ok, he's friendly" when their dog approaches someone.

I can’t fucking stand roller coasters. Even the ones meant for tiny, tiny children give me an anxiety attack. Once, when some relatives tried to convince/drag me to ride a roller coaster, I started sweating, feeling nauseous, crying and literally begging God under my breath to do something.

The roller coaster broke down when we were midway through the line. I wanted to throw up in relief. Fuck roller coasters. I wish people didn’t expect you to get on them when you’re visiting an amusement park.

What's really weird is, I find small and medium sized roller coasters WAY scarier than big ones. Which is obviously the complete opposite of what one would expect.

The problem with small and medium/sized roller coasters, is that you sit in this little boxcar, and you're only seat-belted in, and the track under you isn't even that big, and it constantly feels like you're going to fly out of the boxcar and/or like the boxcar is going to fly off the track. Whereas with big roller coasters, you're usually fully clamped in with a big padded metal harness thing that's very solid. Plus, the speed at which the ride moves, and how substantial the track is, makes it feel like there is no way you could detach from the track, even when you're upside down.

The scariest ride I've ever been on was a medium-sized roller coaster. I felt like I was going to die. Years later I went on a huge roller coaster and had a blast/wasn't scared at all.

Your response makes me even more relieved I never got on that roller coaster...

Oh man, same! I felt like such a chicken because my cousin dragged me on a mid sized coaster once and I practically cried I was so scared. I thought it was hilarious when the huge one with a loop and a corkscrew was super fun, lol.

Your relatives are assholes. No offense. Maybe they're not assholes all the time. But forcing someone to do something they CLEARLY don't want to do is a dick move.

Yeah, they’re definitely not assholes all the time, but I appreciate the sentiment thanks other nonnie. In fact I think the only reason I was never super pissed at them is just because I was so floored at how damn lucky I was the coaster broke down.

Thankfully, majority of them have wisened up and seem to realize how utterly terrified I am of roller coasters. Helps that I’m an adult so a flat “hell no” is enough to get any pressure off my back.

Also helps that since I’ve been officially diagnosed with anxiety I can always wave my meds around and go, “THE SIGNS LITERALLY SAY TO TAKE CAUTION IF YOU HAVE SO-AND-SO ILLNESS!!”

Goddamn, you really don't pick your family, do you? I'm so sorry your relatives were such bungholes. Amusement parks should be fun, not an excuse to torture someone! hugs if you want, and nobody should ever be forced to go on a ride they don't want to.

Yeah, beggars can’t be choosers and all that but now that I’m older, I’m much more forward about saying, “Nah, I’m out of here!”

Appreciate the virtual hugs! :)

Guns, firearms, things that could be used as weapons and are relatively uncommon in my everyday life. I always feel uncomfortable when I walk by a cop and notice they have a gun (not all members of the police carry a gun in my country), or that one time there was a guy in my bus with a baseball bat (when baseball isn't a thing here at all). I get this immediate thought of "what if they suddenly lose their mind and start attacking people?"

I'm a hypochondriac. And I have general anxiety disorder so it's real fun. Currently I think I have a brain tumor. Ten years ago I thought I had thyroid cancer. Oh, and m absolutely terrified to go to the doctor.

I tell ya, it's a blast being me.

One that I only have in my sleep: elevators going down. Every time I have a dream that involves an elevator, it will at some point go down in an uncontrolled freefall and scare the hell out of me. Never ever have any problems with them in waking life, so I have no idea where it comes from. No bad experiences, no trouble taking them either direction. Even going down the one in the Empire State Building, which drops really fast, was fun! But my subconscious just has an unholy terror of them for some reason.

Ships hulls, especially large ones, particularly the overhang at bow and stern where they enter the water. Some weird mix of megalophobia and submechanophobia I guess. Unexpected adverts for cruise holidays usually give me a swoop of nausea before I manage to look away.
