Re: What do you own that sparks joy?

This is a nice comment, anon! I feel similarly. I'm not sure I'd use the word "joy" about my things, but a lot of my things bring me real pleasure.

For me, part of it is that I grew up fairly poor, and was a depressed lump through a lot of my teens when I could've theoretically had a job and been less poor. So for most of my life, almost everything I had was cheap and/or used, and having to buy things was a source of anxiety for me/my parents.

Now that I have a bit more disposable income, it's unbelievably nice to be able to just buy myself things because they're nice and I like them.

I get a lot of joy out of the thought that I like things I own. It's more than only being satisfied with something, better than "oh, this will do." I don't like shopping, and I don't like or desire many things, so when I do find something I like, and I obtain it, it's like yes! This is a nice blanket. This is the blanket I have wanted. And now I have it, and it is fluffy. Of all the blah boring blankets in the world I have no interest in, I ran into this one which I actually liked a lot, and it is mine! For the long-ass foreseeable future, I no longer have to think about blankets or try to search for something I like.

My boots bring me joy! I have exactly one pair that I have worn almost daily for almost six years. My search for boots was over when I found them. When they wear out, I'll buy another pair of the exact same kind from the same brand from the same store, or something as similar as possible. I have small joy every time I put them on in the morning, because of all the boots in the world, I have found mine.

Maybe I just really hate shopping

We are very different in this regard. I love shopping, and I love having lots of stuff. I never love an object so much that I don't want alternative versions of it. (Except one stuffed animal I own which is the only stuffed animal I want.)

However, we're somewhat similar in that I have a strong sense of what I like, and what I want, and I won't just get any old version of something.

I'm with you, anon - fuck shopping, it is the worst. When i find a thing that is exactly what i want and works 100 percent like i want it to, i will keep it for *decades*. I own a dress that is 35 years old. I wear it every summer, I *love* it.

So - yeah. :D
