Jack was a traditional nickname for John for a very long time and some people still do use it that way instead of a name in its own right or as a nickname for other J names (Jacob, Jason, James, etc.).

John F. Kennedy was very widely known as Jack. Jack Nicholson's actual name is John. Jack Lemmon, Jackie Gleason, etc. And characters like Jack McFarland and Jack Donaghy also have John as a given name.
