Nah. There's nothing wrong with doing the interpretative dance of reading stuff into stuff, as long as you realize that you're building castles in air, not finding any kind of objective truth. Just in general, interpretation doesn't have to be about decoding some specific message that someone intentionally created. You can interpret things as though they were written, even if you know that in point of fact that they weren't written, because human beings are incredible creatures and it's what we do.

(there are specific circumstances where it might be in poor taste to try and play interpretive games about people, but that's different from it being wrong in general)

Yeah, you have a good point. I know RPF shippers have the reputation of being a little...crazy/creepy, so I'm being careful not to go into that territory. I've never interacted with the actual people on social media or whatever but I see people saying "they said/did X so obviously they're having an affair" and tagging the actual people (including someone who said they would pay to watch them have sex, ugh) and I'm not going anywhere near that.

I mean, I like watching them saying cute things to each other and being adorable, but I realize that the things that people (including me) are interpreting as slashy are actually just evidence that they're really close friends. I guess there's nothing wrong with analyzing stuff they say/do as long as I realize that they're not actually having a secret affair (and I wouldn't want them to honestly, I think they'd be a great couple if they were both single, but they're both in relationships and cheating isn't cool).
