It doesn't seem he is saying that Jack is a nickname for THIS particular character. Just saying John is a traditional nickname for it and that Jack Morrison shares his name with John "Marion Mitchell Morrison" Wayne. But I can see where fans would think his name is John.

His "gravestone" in his origin story video says "Jack Morrison" on it. I don't think they'd put only a nickname on a gravestone.
