You often see them complaining about easily fixed problems (paint color, lighting fixtures) to dredge up something to complain about. I think they also try to make it look like the one they chose has some other problem, like being too expense or something, to make it harder for the audience to guess, but then magically they have more money or whatever the problem was went away.
