What does this have to do with ~~~problematic ships~~~? Every fandom is vulnerable to this kind of thing. Really, almost any human group is vulnerable to this kind of thing. It sucks and it's completely awful but that's kinda how it is.

I assumed OP meant it's sad how they can recognize abusive behavior in other personal relationships but not in their own situations?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think OP meant that it's ironic and kinda messed up that fandoms will yell a lot about fictional ships being abusive but pay 0 attention to actual abusers who are in the fandom hurting real people. This is something I see a lot in some fandoms myself, like -- "callout posts" about a person who ships 'abusive pairings' will get thousands of notes but posts warning people about fans who have a long history of actual abuse will get a fraction of that.

I've definitely also gotten the feeling before that a lot of people in fandom care more about fictional abuse than real life abuse.

Yeah, I can see that, I guess my level of expectations is just so low for people. It just seems like the pattern is repeated so many times, no matter what the group in question is, no matter how much they "should" be able to recognize abusive traits. It's my expectation for fandom the same as for anyone else.

DA

I agree with you on that part. I think OP's point has some bearing though since most generic groups don't have a large focus on calling out the problematic behaviors of characters or relationships. Like if this specific group is intentionally making identifying problematic dynamics one of their priorities, I can see why OP expects more of them vs. the average random person

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Again, I understand why someone might react that way. But I don't think it's correct.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
OP here - yeah that's what I meant. Parts of this fandom exaggerate "abuse" until ships between adult characters are now "pedophilia" but when there's a real person showing signs of being really gross nobody cares as long as they ship the right things?

Makes it feel like fictional people matter more than real ones on top of being really uncomfy.

Is this about a player? If so, I think I know who it is. Or is it about a character? If so, I have no idea who it is.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
If it's about a player, there's at least three who could fit this description.

Who were you thinking? Dreamkapzer is confirmed so not sure if they would pick them. My other three guesses were Taimou, Effect, and Pine.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Taimou, Effect and Surefour. S4 doesn't talk about depression or anything, but his interactions with fans on twitter frankly creeps me out. I had to unfollow him.

So be both chose the same two. I wonder who it is!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
what's wrong with effect and pine?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed it was about an artist or writer but a player would make sense too.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was about Dreamkazper too until I continued reading.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
OP here - no it's someone in transformative fandom, not a OWL player.

Ah. I know nothing about authors. :P

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
It particularly bothers me when there's money involved. (I need to pay my rent! Oh, this month it's my laptop AND I hurt my wrist! Next month I'll make up something else!)

And it doesn't just apply to BNF's either. Liking the same character or ship doesn't make anyone a good person, any more than it makes anyone a bad person. And just because they're in your fandom, or any other group, doesn't make them trustworthy.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen from the fandom, aren't the obsessively calling-out-problematic-ship part and the obsessively-OWL part kinda separate? Maybe that's why they don't get to be called out much.

(I'm assuming the BNF is OWL player since we all know they have some pretty toxic people in the roster there. I don't really follow them closely to make an exact guess tho)

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
OP here - probably should have used a different pic but I wanted to keep it vague. It's not OWL. It's the fic/art/meta end of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The line between “please support my patreon” and “I forgot to pay my rent again and I need to go to a con, so give me money, bitches” isn’t really that fine at all, but fandom’s full of suckers.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-26 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck Overwatch fandom. But if this is about OWL fandom? Just... ugh. Those are real people.
