I actually wasn't sure which came first. I've seen some of Rachel Bloom's other videos so I'm definitely not surprised to hear the explicit songs were written first, but like I said, the TV ones sound natural, so I could imagine them being the originals with Bloom making them more explicit later to fit her style better.

The show was supposed to air on premium cable (like HBO or Starz or something) before it was knocked down to the cw. The uncensored came first.

The uncensored versions would definitely have been the first drafts of the songs but I 100% agree with you that the TV edits sound and flow better. Just because you can make something crude and vulgar doesn't always mean you should.
