Hey dude, DA here, and I loathe Madoka fwiw, but there's nothing wrong with angst being an appealing theme to a show. Madoka is not the first show to go there. In fact, hurt-comfort is a thing a shit ton of people are into! There are other magical girl shows that do a similar thing (Nurse Angel Ririka SOS has a bittersweet ending of a similar vein), Sailor Moon sacrifices herself CONSTANTLY. It's part of the genre. I grew up reading fic that took it to worse extremes than that.

Now I'm on the shounen side of things, but don't act like just because Madoka is all about the suffering that it's bad purely based on that. Personally I got tired of it being shoved in my face as new and amazing and edgy when I'd seen it all before in other shows. I'm sure on its own it's just another story that happened to resonate with a lot of people, and piss others off.
