In what way did Blizzard make a big deal out of it/be self-congratulatory?

This. It was literally like...three lines in a 10 page story. The ONLY reason Chu tweeted about it was because people were wanting confirmation is Soldier was bi or gay. People up top are wack.

it's like dumbledore all over again. i'm sorry, but it doesn't count as queer rep if the creators can't even be assed to include it in the text and just slip it in in some sort of easily-missable/skippable side materials or interviews. the other games mentioned above may have their flaws but at least the queerness is present in the game itself.

look, i'm queer, i want more lgbt characters in things. but that means i want more actual queerness in the actual canons, not three lines in some side story years after the canon came out that people don't even have to read if they don't want to. it's a chickenshit copout.

Years after it came out? You realize Overwatch is... ongoing... and puts out official material like this all the time that has always been considered canon like... no you don't have to read it to play the game which is the main canon but it's still a multimedia franchise and everything that comes out in official material is canon even if you miss it
