This is the type of secrets I like to see! The whole "I know its historically inaccurate but costume porn!" You are a hero(ine) anon!

Hell yeaH!

Historical accuracy in a movie is only really an issue for me anyways if someone is drawing really stupid conclusions based on historical inaccuracy. As long as the story's good...

It was almost comically inaccurate and I loved every single minute of it anyways.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-27 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. I love that it's a historical movie about two women vying for the affections of one woman. It's such a refreshing change from the historical/period dramas I used to watch where countless women must fight each other for the dick (*cough*affections*cough*) of one man. Someone ought to make more f/f and m/m versions of this plotline.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-27 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally understandable!

As long as the people who made the movie don't go around telling me how accurate their movie is, I honestly don't really mind inaccuracies (There are exceptions like something eyerollingly dumb) in movies. I'm here for the pretty costumes and to see my historical favs.

Eh as someone with two history degrees who works in a historical visitor attraction (in an education role) I've long learned to get over "this isn't accurate!" especially in the case of films where it never intended to be. It's a black comedy that happens to be set around the time of Queen Anne and takes some parts of the real situation but ultimately it's meant to entertain rather than educate. People can read up about the real stuff if the film makes them interested in it.

And yes the costumes and the sets were beautiful. I also enjoyed that it was three very strong female leads, but especially Olivia Colman who was brilliant as always. I did enjoy Nicholas Hoult's turn too but this film definitely belonged to the ladies.

I say all this but it's a different story when something is promoted as accurate/true and demonstrably...isn't.

I too was annoyed by the Mary Queen of Scots movie

(real talk tho there will always be morons who just assume everything they see on a screen is 100% completely accurate and will go around telling people "that's how it really happened!" but tbh it bothers me less when it's something as easily proven inaccurate as certain parts of The Favorite)

Haha I saw Mary Queen of Scots on the same day as The Favourite and while the fact it was presented as a more straight-forward historical interpretation was somewhat annoying, I thought Margot Robbie really showed what she's capable of as an actress and I loved that. At the same time the clandestine meeting scene between Elizabeth and Mary was bullshit. Because I know we're in for years of people thinking that actually happened. Having said that, the fact that those two never actually met is somewhat of a historical cockblock given how their situations seem ripe for a dramatic meeting at some point.

And then you've got stuff like Braveheart. Ok, it's...not good. But we know so little about the real William Wallace that it gets a *sort of* pass from the point of view that it largely draws from a source written a couple of centuries after Wallace's death and that source is probably mostly made up anyway. It's all about how the story makes you feel though, it was meant to invoke anger and passion. However, there's a part of me that wishes that almost anyone other than fucking Mel Gibson was associated with that role.

Also I totally get the rage regarding the blue face paint and plaid because both those were simply not things at the time of Wallace and even pre-Google you could find this out easily!

Well, the stuff about Edward II in Braveheart was inaccurate and violently homophobic so that’s very shitty

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that. Definitely not a good choice at all. At least Outlaw King didn't go down the same route, though it did make Prince Edward a little pantomime like still.

Personally, how important historical accuracy is to me tends to be based on a number of factors, such as-

1. How far in the past is something based?
2. How hard do the creators/advertisers push the "trufax" angle?
3. Does the style and tone of the movie actively divorce it from reality?
4. Is it a story about someone who was mostly powerful, or someone who was subjugated?

The inaccuracies really bothered me in something like The Imitation Game, for example. But in something like The Favorite, I'm perfectly happy to watch a movie that's extremely loosely inspired by reality.

Imitation Game was egregiously inaccurate!!

Going by the trailers I've seen, they never aimed for historical accuracy in the first place.

I really want to watch this now!

On the other hand, poor Anne was pregnant through almost the whole of her reign, and not a single one of her babies lived to its 2nd birthday. Most of her pregnancies resulted in miscarriages and stillbirths. She did not have a happy life. Those tea parties with "Mrs. Freeman" (Sarah) were probably some of the best times she had.

I've never seen this movie, but I really want to know.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-28 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I really need to go see this movie. We're supposed to get dumped on with snow tonight/tomorrow, so it will need to wait!
