To be honest, River was my favorite character in the who-verse too! You have great taste, anon!

I like River as a character but her being Rory and Amy's daughter was a stupid idea, incredibly poorly executed

This. They took a really cool, tragic concept and turned it into a soap opera. I still love her but I hated that element.

I don't watch Doctor Who so everytime I see a picture of the character I wonder what on Earth is Doctor Elizabeth Corday doing with a TARDIS?

I thought her being Amy and Rory’s daughter was a bit much. But I adore everything else about her, so I’m ok with it.

I adore River! When I heard she was coming back for season 5 years ago, I was so happy cause I had loved her in the Library two parter so much.

Her being Amy's and Rory's daughter doesn't bother me, but the execution was not really all that great. I'm totally willing to overlook that, though cause everyone actedthat story really well.

Praying that she'll be back for at least one episode in 13th run cause she should get to kiss every incarnation of the Doctor forever.

I disagree with everything you said, but everyone has different tastes. Plenty of characters and storylines to go around!

I was *fine* with River, she does get too much hate. But overall I wasn't especially bothered about her being present or not. Until her episode with Peter Capaldi. God I wish we'd have got more than that one story because they were amazing together.

Personally I hate her. She's the kind of character I normally love, cool character who pops in and out every now and then, but the way they handled her character was so... teenage girl writing their first self-insert fanfic. All the things that mentioned in the OP are things that I thought were handled dreadfully. But more than that I hate that she is so much of what the Doctor stands against and for some reason he is ok with it for no reason. They have no chemistry and it's just like the writers suddenly decided one day that the Doctor was in love with her.

But if you like her, go you.

If there's 1 thing I'm confident of, it's that River isn't an authorial stand-in.

I thought she had amazing chemistry with Capaldi.

I love River too, and I didn’t mind her being Amy and Rory’s daughter, but I wasn’t crazy about how season six handled that whole storyline. I mean, I do still ship Doctor/River, but .... season six wasn’t my favorite.

My brain can't see her as the child of those two. She looks nothing like either of them.

I agree with you, OP. I love River, I thought it was weird, but cool, that she was Rory & Amy's daughter. That could've been executed better, but that was hardly the fault of any of the actors (or characters).

Before I really looked at it I thought this might be a secret about River the Netflix police drama. (Even though it very very obviously isn't.)

I didn't like her in her first appearance because it was far too much telling and not enough showing of how great she is. But when she came back and was developed beyond a feisty attitude and a catchphrase, I liked her more.

My biggest problem was getting over my irrational dislike of the actress, though.

I love River 'cause she's awesome and I wish she'd gotten some more episodes with Twelve because the Christmas special was great. I wouldn't have minded her being Rory and Amy's daughter if it had been executed better. That whole bullshit of "you got to raise me after all" because Amy watched out for Mels/River at school really pissed me off. Watching out for your friend when you're a kid is not the same thing as raising a kid.

Initially, I loved her. I enjoyed it less and less as time went on, which had more to do with the writing than the character or acting.

I like her a lot. Maybe her arc wasn't the greatest, but I chalk that up to Moffatt being Moffatt. Her character is still a great idea, and I love when she pops back up.

You might enjoy her work with Big Finish, she has her own audio series and it's a lot of fun!
