Not OP, but trust me, even for Bill Bryson. His crankiness used to be amusing; in this book it's basically "everything sucks. Bastards. Asshole. This is a boring town." Then why are you writing about it?

OP acknowledges this right in the text of the secret, upfront. It's like, the first sentence. I'm not sure why the sarcasm is warranted?

I wasn't being sarcastic. I think of Bill Bryson's writing as, like, fairly jubilant.

nayrt but how much of his work have you read? He's always had a cranky, complaining schtick, used for comic effect. I'd say it's a key element of his style.
