Re: Movies/shows with gay couples

I actually ended up liking Insatiable, though I gave up somewhere around episode three or four the first time I tried it. Everyone is just such an asshole that I couldn't take it anymore. Picked it up again somewhere in the middle and I think it kinda picked up? I mean, both the show and the characters (especially Patty) acknowledge that Patty is a fucking awful person and I like that neither the fact that she's now pretty on the outside or even that she realised what an awful person she is made her instantly better. She's still messed up and still messes up (spectacularly). But I still feel like there's been a lot of character development, even if Patty and Bob A. are probably the characters that changed the least.

The Bob/Bob storyline is pretty amazing, as far as I'm concerned. That scene in the bathroom was great. I also just really liked Bob B. in the last few episodes. Throwing Magnolia under the bus for cheating was such an asshole move but the way he just broke down in the rehab center and then tried to make things right really got to me. I'm really looking forward to season 2, honestly, and where they are going with Bob B. and the Bob/Bob/Coralee situation.

Netflix keeps recommending Sex Education, so I might just give it a go. Is there a lot of second-hand embarrassment? That's a huge squick of mine and it seems like there could be a lot of that in the show.

Oh fuck, yes, there is a lot. Probably don't watch it.

I mean, for me personally, I didn't mind the second hand embarrassment, because it's so pervasive and all-consuming - especially for Otis (the main character) - that he's basically living in a constant state of simultaneous mortification and does-not-give-a-fuck. Like, he's maxed out his capacity for mortification before the show even starts, so when something mortifying happens, he kind of melts down for a second and then just moves on like nothing's different. Which I find kind of refreshing and cathartic.

But.

My tolerance for mortification is...medium? I cannot in good conscience recommend this show to you if you have a low tolerance for mortification; it might kill you.
