I've been using some leftover fruit and vegetable peels for fertilizer and my potted plants seem to be liking it. Also just found out you could use eggshells for fertilizer too! Seems one of those peels had some tomato seeds on them and now a tomato plant is growing inside the pot. Just as unplaneed.

I also used some peels to try and revive a lily plant in my garden and it worked wonders!

tl;dr recycling peels seem to be good for the environment and for my plants.

Do you just mix it into the soil or spread the on top?

I mix it into the soil. If there's a plant I tend to mix it around it and leave it. If there is not plants/it's an emtpy pot I mix it and move the soil a bit every week/2 weeks to check on the progress.

This is basically like, easier composting, so I have to ask, does it smell or attract fruit flies?

NAYRT but little dishes of apple cider vinegar will ward off fruit flies, idk about the smell.

Not sure this is true, tbh. Because one of the most common fruit fly traps is apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap. I've done it myself many times, and it attracts fruit flies.

Oh lol, maybe my region doesn’t have fruit flies and I’ve been putting out my version of a tiger-repelling Rock?

I usually keep the pots outside and bury the peels deep so I can't comment on the smell, but yes I've seen fruit flies being attracted to the pots for like the first week or so, when it's still fresh.

EDIT: Aaaand according to google, they might be vinegar flies!

I should have added to the main post but another thing you can use as fertilizer replacement is used coffee grounds. We use it a lot after making coffee instead of throwing it away.
