What's your view on torrenting/viewing without pay?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Do you think it's morally wrong? Do you do it anyway?

Re: What's your view on torrenting/viewing without pay?

I try not to, tbh. Then again, I have Spotify/Netflix/Hulu/HBO so I can't think of anything I'd want to torrent.

I think it is morally wrong but if you do it, meh.

I think it's at best morally dubious, but I'm happy to do it when I have no legal access to the media in question*. It's like, they won't sell me the thing, why not steal it? It's not like they're getting less of my money than if I don't watch?

*That is, when it's not online, or DVD, or it's blocked in my region. That sort of thing.

This is how I feel about it. I'm happy to pay money to obtain stuff legally, but if you won't give me a legal way to access it, why should I feel bad about pirating it? I can't give you money for it because you won't let me.

That actually happened a while back with a particular digital-only single for one of my favorite non-American bands. I WANTED to buy it to support the group, but Amazon Japan literally would not let me purchase it because I wasn't actually in Japan. And since there was no physical release, it wasn't like I could just buy the CD either. I ended up pirating it because there was no legal way for me to purchase it and I felt bad about it, but screw it, I really wanted that single and they made it impossible for me to obtain it in a legal fashion.

It depends on context. Is it something I can easily get otherwise? Is the cost reasonable? Would I pay for it, if given the opportunity?

For instance, I will happily torrent a TV show or movie that isn't available on DVD or a streaming site. I won't torrent a HQ rip of a movie currently in theaters or on Netflix (or equivalent).

I don't think that it's morally wrong, but I do think it's good to find ways to support creators when you can. That can take a lot of different forms, obviously. But the idea that we should respect copyright regimes, in and of themselves, I do not.

Generally I use it just for anime and as a "preview". If I like something enough I'll buy a hardcopy. Sometimes it gets weirder where, like with Revue Starlight, official subs were crap so it was off to the fansubs. Sometimes it's a series that doesn't have an official English release. It's grey and hazy.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
How much of the anime do you watch to consider a "preview" though? Pirating and watching an entire series then deciding you don't like it and not buying it seems pretty shitty, but I get if it's an episode or two.

Re: What's your view on torrenting/viewing without pay?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
If I don't like it I'm not going to be watching more than one or two episodes in the first place, so.

Re: What's your view on torrenting/viewing without pay?

I view it a little worse than jaywalking tbh. You can make a sorts of justifications, some of which are kinda true (they wouldn't buy it anyway, it's the only way to access stuff stuck in copyright hell, wide access can increase fans, it's not technically stealing) but at the end of the day, it's a type of theft.

I do. however, have lots of reservations about copyright, especially when money doesn't go to the people who actually made the thing thing or it's not accessible through legal means.

I do it anyway and throw money at the stuff I like. It's pretty omnipresent with anime and manga and I doubt they'd be be nearly as popular over here if the ability to pirate them wasn't two clicks away. And scans are a weird gray area where fan efforts establish a reader base and publishers will use that to gauge what to publish.

It's basically stealing but whatever, people do steal stuff. I don't personally do it.

Re: What's your view on torrenting/viewing without pay?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's stealing but it's usually stealing less from the people who actually made whatever thing, and more from the international conglomerate that's exploiting the rights to it

Well. That escalated quickly.

lmao what is your fucking damage

Re: What's your view on torrenting/viewing without pay?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's stealing, and I can't stand when people justify it with the stupidest reasons.

Is it minor in the grand scheme of things if you pirate, say, Avengers? Sure. Fuck people who pirate independent/small shop creators though.

Also, I have more sympathy for stuff not legally available. Like, it hasn't been released in your country yet and there are no plans for it to ever be. Old doujinshi that was never translated into English or whatever.

Re: What's your view on torrenting/viewing without pay?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
It is morally wrong, but I did it for years and stopped mostly because I was worried about getting caught, so I don't judge people for doing it. I would still do it for things I can't get legally, and I don't think that's wrong.

Re: What's your view on torrenting/viewing without pay?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. I read tons on manga scanlations and pirate tons of anime, several of which haven’t been official translated at all. If I love a series I will try and buy the translated manga volumes or official merch if possible tho.

(Honestly speaking, trying to support the creators instead of pirating anime seems like too much trouble given that instead of one uniform platform nowadays I’d need to get accounts for Netflix, Crunchyroll AND Amazon Prime. If I had hangups about pirating I’d have a lot less to watch.)

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe a little? I try not to do it, but sometimes, stuff I want to watch isn't available through any legal means for me. There's a lot of BL that I like that hasn't been officially released here and I doubt it ever will since BL's already pretty niche.

Torrent is great for free software distribution. I don't really care about TV. If the producer doesn't care enough to release it through a channel I can get, I don't care enough to watch it.

Re: What's your view on torrenting/viewing without pay?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-30 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think it’s morally wrong to pirate stuff that’s legally available for, say, the standard price of a dvd or with a common subscription service, but I think it’s pretty neutral if it’s not available legally where you are—region locked stuff or similar—or if it’s something that’s out of print so the only “legally” available copies are from people selling stolen library books/dvds—I work in a public library and I’d much rather people copied library materials than stole or “lost” them, which unfortunately happens with out of print/production stuff all the time.

But if you have plenty of money and just don’t buy media because why should you pay for anything, I’m gonna think you’re an asshole.
