[Stranger Things]

Ahh yup season one will always stand alone to me as a masterpiece.

What didn't you like about season 2? I watched both seasons back-to-back and while season 2 probably had more bits I didn't like about it, I think other bits really came into their own.

Not OP, but for me, season 2 was fine! It's just that season 1 was so perfect as a complete story, with every element serving the whole and all of it tied up in a neat little bow by the end.

OP

Pretty much this. It's not that S2 was bad, I just think S1 was phenomenal. The kind of thing I never saw coming, but as soon as it exists it's so clear and unforgettable. I watched it and had one of those rare "where has this BEEN all my life?" moments.

By contrast, S2 was...fine? It didn't betray the characters or the universe of the story in any glaring ways, which I was intensely grateful for. But it felt a little flabby and meandering compared to the tight, dovetailing plot lines of S1. And the new characters were fine but they didn't gel for me the way the original cast did (except Bob, I did like Bob a lot). And the way the Nancy/Jonathan thing was handled was fine but it felt a little bit stock. And the Lucas/Dustin/Max thing felt unnecessary. And taking the demogorgon from S1 and timesing it by 100 was not my favorite plot element. And a lot of elements in episode 2.07 didn't entirely work for me.

Which sounds like a lot of things I didn't like. But it was still pretty good IMO. It just wasn't the ~cinematic experience~ that S1 was.

Same. Season 1 was perfect. Season 2 annoyed the shit out of me for all kinds of reasons.

I liked season 2 just fine but it definitely wasn’t as finely tuned as season 1.

I do like season 2 and very much enjoyed it but I agree with this sentiment, season 1 was really fantastic and I loved how all the different stories merged together in the end. Season 2... didn't manage the same, which isn't it's fault since they were never going to be able to pull off the same thing and have it work as well.

But it could have been left as a single season without any issue at all.

Same. Season 2 was alright, but very derivative of the first one and, good lord, I did not give a single shit about Billy, Max, or El's sister, they added nothing. Nancy and Jonathan's plotline was a snoozefest as well and felt like it was only there to appease the fandom (giving into fanservice rather than coming up with your own organic storyline is never a good sign). I think unraveling all the intrigue set up in the original season is going to bring down the show even further. They can maybe squeak out season 3 (which I don't have high hopes for as all that's left to do is ruin the mystery of the upside down or bring in more of El's "relatives" which, if that follows the same path as what they did with Eight, then no thank you), but I can't imagine how they'll drag this show on for 5 fucking seasons.

I'm sure you wouldn't be alone on the pedestal issue. That's what people tend to do when all they have to think about is potential - look at Firefly. Everything is fresh and nothing loses its sheen if you don't have enough material to fatigue you.

I did think season 2 was a worthy successor though. The only think I outright hated was Eleven's immediate jealousy of Max; such an exasperatingly disappointing decision.

I don't think this is entirely fair, because S1 of Stranger Things was complete. It could have stopped there and felt like an incredibly well-crafted story with a strong ending. By contrast, S1 of Firefly was very good, but it was also just the fragment of a beginning of that story, and for that reason I've always been hesitant to put it on a pedestal. Because we barely even got a sense of what it might become before it was cancelled.

Saying that all there was to think about was potential makes it sound like Stranger Things S1 was some unfinished story - as though S1 had been the appetizer to a meal. Which isn't the case. S1 was a whole meal. That's part of what made it so excellent, but also a big part of what made it so difficult to follow up on.

No, I get it. S1 was a complete story, yes, but it was also an introduction to a whole, unexplored world. Think of it like The Wizard of Oz, or The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. They are both complete stories in and of themselves, but are also introductions to an entire series of stories. And trust me -- I've read other Oz books. If I'd had time to explore the potential opened up in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, only to get a follow-up story of Tip the Boy Who's Really A Princess Even Though Girls Kind of Suck, I'd have been hella let down.

I didn't mind season 2 (apart from that one episode that really did live up to the rage I was reading about before I saw it) but yeah season 1 by itself was just perfect viewing for me. I didn't get that "must ration out episodes before I devour them in one sitting!" feeling again until The Haunting of Hill House. Which is why although I'm sure a second season of that will be perfectly fine, I'm not going to get overly hyped about it if it happens.
