at least where i live, there's public transportation in the suburbs. it doesn't go everywhere but it's still a lot better to drive a short distance to a bus or train station and then use public transportation for the rest of the trip than it is to drive for an hour or so into the city.

I don't know if that's true for the country as a whole but I haven't done the research to say for sure

NAYRT—As someone who lives in a suburb, takes public transit, and doesn’t own a car, no one in the suburbs drives to a bus or train station and takes public transit to their destination except to football/baseball games, concerts, and for Earth Day.

The rest of the time it’s poor* people, disabled people, elderly people, homeless people, and, depending on the route, students. Every single family home on my block has at least two cars parked out front or in their garages. I’m the only exception, with neither garage nor car—practically sacrilege!

*I think a lot of really poor people people can’t afford to take buses/trolleys here that often though—senior/disabled/medicaid one way fare is $1.10, everyone else is $2.25-2.50, a day pass is $7.00 unless you already have a fare card in which case it’s $5.00, there’s no transfers aside from day passes, and monthly passes are $72-$100.

they absolutely do where i live. in fact, there's been an ongoing problem because a lot of the train stations don't have enough parking to accommodate all of the people who want to be able to drive there and park and take the train in to the city.
