Re: Betas, what's your worst writer story?

I think it's fair to be picky about that stuff, but that it's also important to upfront about the fact that you're picky about that stuff. Because, frankly, I don't expect fanfiction to adhere to a higher standard of fact-checking than the source material does. So, for example, if you're going to die on the hill of scientific accuracy when it comes to things like CPR or amnesia or crime scene forensics, that's fine. But it's not unreasonable for an author to assume that readers will be able to suspend their disbelief to the same extent that they do for the source material.

AYRT

It had nothing to do with the source material. If it had been something like misusing CPR or flatlines getting shocked and it was a medical canon where that thing happened, I would have grit my teeth and dealt with it. It was things like having the couple do something on Christmas Day in the US when that wouldn't have happened, and it could have easily been replaced by something else. And things like a family member who was really into a hobby according to this story getting one of the basic parts of the hobby completely wrong in an easily changed way.

Would it drastically affect the story for most people to read things like that? Probably not. But it really bothered me, especially as they seemed so unnecessary. Hence why I gave up beta'ing instead of trying to keep my personal standards when others were fine with not caring. No need to subject both of us to it.
