As an actual gay person: the way his thoughts and such were written about his old flame is what pinged me as gay. So literally Rowling confirming it was just confirmation for me.

Lol I can’t lie, he pinged me as “old” and I had a weird fixation on magical or enchanted objects (eesh wtf so blatant) fucking so it didn’t even occur to me he was sexual until JK brought it up years later and I was like, well there’s something I guess I didn’t know? When I read the books years ago it didn't occur to me that Dumbledore could be gay until JKR said so. (It also didn't occur to me that Will and Lyra had sex in The Amber Spyglass. I thought that they were literally just petting each other's daemons. A ton of things flew over younger!me's head.)
