I just... how can you call another human being garbage and consider yourself on the right/morally superior side?

This is something that always baffled me about Christians I grew up around, and it's the same thing all over again with internet moralizers.

Sorry for not being clear, but I meant that her statement was utter garbage.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
DA - I presumed this is what you meant.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - yeah, that seemed pretty obvious to me

ayrt is a little reactive maybe

DA

Thanks for the clarification, I thought the same as the prev anon that you were referring to her personally.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - who cares if they were referring to her personally? I am shocked that this post is dominated by a discussion as to whether it’s ok to harshly criticize someone for using their own position of privilege and fame to defend sexual abuse. I don’t give a shit if she or anyone else feels sad about (possibly) being called trash/garbage in this scenario. She’s a grown-ass woman who can deal with the consequences of her own statements, just like he should have to deal with the consequences of his actions.

I've never called anyone garbage (it seems to be a tumblr thing?) but I've noticed in FS that people have some weird trigger about it. Why is it so offensive? As opposed to, I dunno, calling someone an asshole or such?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because tumblr does it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
I've never gotten mad at someone (out loud) for calling someone garbage, but my perception of it is that calling someone garbage is more dehumanizing than calling them an asshole.

I mean, someone who is an asshole can also be a lot of other things. We know that. We basically take it for granted. They may be an asshole, but they're also good looking, and a hell of a tennis player. Or whatever. Substitute other traits in here. Whereas calling someone garbage basically sums them up and throws them away. When you call someone garbage, it's as though that's all they are, or any traits they possess outside of being garbage are completely irrelevant. They are not a person. They are a pile of trash in the shape of a person.

This is why, personally, I save calling someone garbage for when they are really, truly a piece of shit. Like, if I cannot imagine them ever reforming so drastically and so convincingly that I'd think they deserved a second chance, then they're garbage.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I see that. Thanks for the thoughtful explanation. Waste of space, piece of shit like you said: those are dehumanizing as well. People react more strongly to "garbage," and I thought perhaps it was because of a meme or something, but I guess it's just a visceral image.

This is interesting. I feel like, if you actually take the insult literally, calling someone an asshole is basically just as dehumanizing as calling someone garbage. But over time we've gotten used to "asshole" as an insult, to the point where we now understand asshole to mean "a specific kind of annoying person", not just your butthole.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
An asshole has a continued purpose, expelling waste is like the opposite of useless and having zero worth

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's all well and good, but you can't joke around about "asshole", and then take "garbage" with total earnest seriousness

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - Yup, I agree with this.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - Frankly, I'm going to choose to direct my disgust at a person defending a sexual abuser vs. someone using an insult that relies too much on hyperbole. A little perspective...

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And that's fine, you do you.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Frankly, this is a patronizing response to someone rightfully pointing out that far too much energy was being devoted to a comment. This derailing bullshit is exactly the kind of thing people do to minimize and distract from actual issues. So let me say it louder and clearer: THE PEOPLE WHO SHOULD GET CALLED OUT ARE THE SEXUAL ABUSERS AND THE JERKS WHO DEFEND THEM, NOT SOMEONE WHO CRITICIZES THOSE PEOPLE IN A WAY THAT IS TOO "SJW TUMBLER" FOR ANOTHER COMMENTER'S TASTES.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
The word is insulting, that's for sure, but people throw it around so often that it loses a lot of its effectiveness for me. Not to mention that the trend now in fandom is for people to self-depreciate and self-flagellate by preemptively calling themselves trash and garbage.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
what an odd hangup to have
