Ooh, this is complicated! Because I think Freeman captures the spirit of Bilbo, but the movie modernized the character into more of a Nonplussed Everyman than the complete Upper Class Twit from Tolkien's original story. And that makes sense because either way you get the "quintessential Englishman's thrown into a fantasy novel and grows into his inner hero" vibe, but the Upper Class Twit protagonist fell out of favor after the War. So, if you're looking for Exactly From the Book Bilbo, you don't really get it from the Hobbit films. But, I still think Freeman was Bilbo.

Eh. I don't think Tolkien was going for Upper Class Twit in the first place. It's just that Tolkien came from a specialised social milieu to begin with, where, for example, professional officers were more uppercrust than the country gentleman that Bilbo comes across as.

Ehhh. Bertie Wooster is an Upper Class Twit type to me. Not Bilbo Baggins. I agree that Freeman's portrayal played up the Nonplussed Everyman more because well, that's a type that Freeman does very well to the point of maybe being typecast.

I actually think there's no "maybe" about it. Freeman gets typecast as "grumpy British Everyman" a LOT, so much so that people say he's a bad actor because he only plays that one type.

SA as above - Also I think it's funny to say that the Upper Class Twit type fell out of favor after the war. Did it truly? It's been a staple of British comedy forever, and continues to be popular. I already mentioned Bertie Wooster, but you also have portrayals by Monty Python right up through the 80s. I can't really think of a post-war period where the British didn't enjoy making fun of Upper Class Twits.

They fell out of favor as the unironic protagonist.

Ironically, Plum's WWII shenanigans played a large part in the Aristocracy's fall from grace in popular culture. Yes, they're still a part of British entertainment, but there has definitely been a tonal shift. It's the difference between 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous' and 'Real Housewives.'

Bilbo didn't become super mega rich until he went on that journey in The Hobbit though.

The Bagginses were very well-thought-of and well-of before that, though. Bag End is a hell of a nice house.

He was still upper class, ie landed gentry that didn’t need to work for a living. Hence his ability to fuck off with dwarves for a year without greater consequences than his relatives arguing over who inherits his stuff.

DA
Exactly.
However, because of the One Ring, the consequences of his trip were eventually profound.
