I went to a defensive driving course once where the instructor stated as fact the four way stop urban legend that a mail truck has right of way over a firetruck, police car, and ambulance. It threw me, as I figured someone who was supposed to be teaching driving laws would actually go with facts, rather than a legend that has been debunked. Even if it was only for interest rather than the true teaching part. (Granted I found the class to be an absolutely ridiculous waste of time for me anyway, as it was 90% "Don't drink and drive" and I don't drink, so I was already annoyed at the whole thing.)

I was doing a kitchen hygiene course and the chef who was teaching it tried to teach everyone how to cheat on their taxes by claiming manicures as work expenses - because obviously, if you work with your hands, getting manicures is just maintaining work equipment!!!
Except it doesn't work like that, that's really stupid, you will absolutely get done for tax evasion.

[I waited until after the class and told everyone else in the class how terrible the suggestion had been]

Also he didn't know how the Goods and Services Tax works, but everyone's confused by that, so I was more willing to forgive there.

I think some of these really innocuous faux factoids just exist in our minds without it even occurring to us to question them. We've just heard them so long ago, or from so many sources, that they cross into the "true without question" part of our brains.

I've never actually heard that four way stop one, but it seems to fall into that category of, like, "of course it's true, I've known it forever."
