It's because mothers are supposed to have nothing to distract them from being the (impossibly) perfect mother. How dare any mom put her own vanity above being constantly available for her children?

(Never mind the facts that babies need to be left alone for brief periods of time sometimes so that they'll learn how to self-soothe.)

I always boggle at the tv-trope new mom who is all 'i haven't showered in three days!!' Really? You have a crib? A car seat? Stick the kid in there and take a shower. They'll be fine.

Take the baby in the shower with you and now both of you are clean. That's what I did.

I only did that when the SO was around, so could hand off the slippery-wet kid for drying while i finished up with my (long) hair. But yeah - take 'em in the shower! :D
