What probably happened is that most normal people who saw it as pedophilic only spoke up for the first initial wave and then made sure to avoid it afterwards. Meanwhile the people who see no problem with pedophilic content are left behind to vocally praise the show with no contrary opinions. Now new folks who never watched the show get convinced that the pedophilic show is actually good because of some funny gif sets by the leftover diehard fans.

I've seen it happen before. It sucks if people get fooled into ignoring/defending problematic stuff. It happened to me when I was younger, but at least now I can spot if a story objectifies or fetishizes characters or large groups of people.
