Is it disrespectful to attend a church for service for spellcrafting

(Anonymous) 2019-02-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s kind of hard to explain but I’m working on a long term spell that kinda seems like it’s going to hinge on me experiencing a place of worship at least once.I absolutely do not plan on being disrespectful (or mentioning Spellcraft lol) and would only attend once to be present, watch, and listen but it feels kinda exploitative and that’s not an energy I want to involve tbh.

Nah. You're just there to see what it's all about - plenty of people do that before deciding if they want to attend a particular church or not. If you're wishing harm on, or planning on intentionally harming anyone there, there's no reason for it to be a bad thing.

Uh, do you mean if I’m NOT wishing harm?! Otherwise you might be a little hardcore for me lmao

I think so long as you're polite and respectful and don't give any misleading impressions that you're into it more than you are, it'll be fine. Attending a service out of interest is something most churches are okay with. Just be aware that if it's a smaller church, chances are good your presence will be noted and you'll be approached by a member of the congregation or the pastor because they want to welcome a potential member. You may have to fend off invitations and other light come-ons.

No I practice alone

It depends on how exactly it fits into the spell, and exactly what your attitude would be, and it also depends on what religion the services are - I can't imagine the Unitarians would object no matter what. And I'd be really interested in those details fwiw.

I do think there are a lot of cases where, yes, it is a legitimate worry. I don't think it would necessarily be offensive to the other people in the service, but I think there's something contradictory about it, about going to a service when your purpose for doing so is at odds with the purpose of the service itself. And it's definitely something that I would be really, really, really careful about for myself.

I haven’t started searching for an appropriate church yet. I want to witness community worship happening as part of a larger healing spell. In part this is meant to fuel l aspects of the spell dependent on my traumatic associations with people using religion to exploit and abuse so it’s a theme that I’m having to pay special considerations to in the casting of it obv.

In light of it being a healing spell to heal your relationship with religion, I really don't think this is disrespectful at all. Good luck with your spell.

I think the very fact that you're concerned about paying the proper respect to a place of worship indicates that you will. Exploitation involves a lack of empathy and compassion. As tabaqui said, as long as you don't intend harm, I see nothing wrong with it. Your presence there might even have a positive effect on others, regardless of your personal reasons for attending.

i think it would be so very hilarious to find out that everyone at church is going either out of habit or curiosity just like you but nobody actually worships there so your spell fails

what kind of fucking spell requires you to exploit others that you can't do it alone at your own altar?

I don’t have an altar. I grew up in a religious cult. I’m being treated for ptsd and I am currently finding it helpful to confront my fear of people, the world, and religion in general. I also just feel less alone as a human right now. I’m trying to embrace the actual effect “magical thinking” can have on people to develop healthy behavior in myself. I am currently working a healing spell which means doing things until i get my ritual and spells “right” and then maintaining that energy. Part of this I think needs to experience and accept communities can share worship in positive ways.

It sounds like a good reason to go, to me. Most non cult churches would hopefully be welcoming of someone seeking to heal from spiritual abuse. I wouldn't mention specifics, and try to be respectful, but honestly it sounds like a good thing

Speaking as someone who’s not and has never been any flavor of religious, I guess just pick a place that is open to outsiders observing/participating in their services.

If you just need the place and not necessarily to be there during worship services, maybe go somewhere that expects a certain amount of tourism to look at stained glass/murals/historical artifacts/whatever, and give a couple bucks if they have a donation box for tourists, or if they take collection after services, or whatever.

See if there are any Wiccan or Druid or the like places you can go. Do you have to specifically go when people are worshipping or does it have to just be a place where people worship? Because there are places of historical worship you could go to if the place is all that's needed.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most folk religions have a long history of women that work spells on Saturdays and go to the church on Sundays. It's nobody else's business.

Well, my question would be do you believe in the diety/energy/whatever the people at that service are worshipping? Like, are you a hardcore atheist, or are you a polytheist who just doesn't happen to worship specific gods?

Because it sounds like to me your purpose of going to a service isn't just to gawk at the worshipers. It sounds like you want to indirectly participate, and be part of that religious energy in a more postive way than you've experienced in the past. There's no rule that says you can't go and actively worship alongside other people, even if you aren't worshiping exactly the same concepts, right? Like, if you don't believe in Jesus you can still believe in the ideas of forgiveness and compassion, and focus on that rather than the dude himself, for example.

I just think it might be helpful to approach it less as going to a place of worship to observe, like you're a researcher watching lions on the Serengeti, and instead think of it as you're going to this place to experience something alongside the other people there. Go as a participant who's joining the people temporarily, rather than an outsider who's only there to sit around and take notes.
