What to do at parties

(Anonymous) 2019-02-03 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I’m at a friend’s party and probably will be here for at least three more hours. There aren’t really events, just people hanging. Since my friend is the host she doesn’t have time to hang. Also, basically all her friends are grad students who all know each other except me. I have spent the last year dealing with mental illness, physical illness, and crappy jobs, so I don’t have much to share. I have anxiety and am autistic, so I’m trying to interact but it’s not going well. As evidenced by me posting on here.

So quick f!s teach me how to make friends at parties.

I wish I knew how to make friends anywhere tbh. Good luck?

Most people want to talk about themselves tbh

Oh man, super awkward. I feel you, because I try to avoid parties like this at all costs. This might not work for your immediate situation, but maybe next time ask your friend if she needs help with hosting duties, or maybe if can spare the time, to introduce and make an active effort to include you in her conversations with other people.

What I usually do is drift around on the edges of groups, listening for interesting conversations and participating when I can, even if it's just an affirmation of what someone's saying.

Ask questions about what they do, where they're from, etc. If they talk about themselves, you don't have to worry about them asking about you, and people like people that seem interested in them.

Think about your favorite most outgoing and confident character, or pretend you're the MC of a novel or a quirky indie movie and this party is the beginning of an adventure of some sort. It's weird, but I've tried it and it works for me.

Don't ask them what they do, unless you add "as a hobby". Plenty of people can't do much, and it's horrible being put on the spot.
