Kingdom?
Russian Doll?
I watched both this week and loved both! Cannot *wait* for season two of 'Kingdom', holy gods, what a cliffhanger!

I want to say more, but don't want spoilers right here in the first comment.

I've been meaning to, but X-Files got added on Amazon Prime sooooooo.

Are they worth the watch?

I definitely think so, yes. 'Kingdom' is, first of all, just gorgeous. It's got some really great characters, i love their take on a familiar monster, and it's really awesome to watch how a story is told and shown when nothing about it is US-centric.

'Russian Doll', in my mind, gets most of its interest from the star, Natasha Lyonne (whom you might know from 'Orange is the New Black'). I think she's just amazing. It's pretty dark, it's extremely 'New York' in a very specific way (which i think is very interesting for those of us who don't live in NY or have any connection to that kind of scene).

'Kingdom' ended on a hell of a cliffhanger, 'Russian Doll' ended very satisfactorily, and I don't think there's going to be another season. They're both short (6 and 8 episodes respectively) and, in my mind, easy to access, to 'get'.

I say go for it!

I saw Kingdom on Netflix and watched out of curiosity, and yoooooo, I liked it a lot. I did suspect that the whole 'they sleep at night' thing was going to end up getting a twist of some kind in the last ep, but yeah. Shit's about to get fucked.

I thought the 'they sleep' thing was cool and different, and then when they were making a run for it through the woods, and they were all coming out from under the rocks and things, like spiders....*shudders*

That was super-creepy. I haven't been creeped out by zombies in a very long time. Like Train to Busan, it was just *different*.

The twist on it was brilliant and also - FUCK YES, they are so fucked.
The image under the pond, of the bodies, was also super-creepy. The line of soldiers moving to shut the gates, that wound all around the hills, up and down, so many hundreds of them - that was an awesome image.

Yeah it was different and interested, and also lulled the characters into a false sense of security because they just needed to last until sun-rise, except not and now the stakes have been raised and it's like, how are they gonna manage to get through this?

Oh yeah their crawling out of their hiding places was super fucking creepy and I loved every second of it. Like, it was right up my 'this is actually scary' alley. (I kept putting off watching Train to Busan and when I eventually looked on Netflix it was gone and I am so mad at myself)

They are really gonna have to fight to survive and I am here for it. I just hope the Prince's guard makes it through, he's pretty sweet and deserves to live, the lady-physician as well. Oh, oh! His wife is gonna have a boy and I am not at all ready for that plot, she seems nice, I don't want her to die. :(

YES! I imagined being out in the woods at twilight, and there's all this slithering, skittering noises as they come crawling out.....

Train to Busan is up on torrents, if you do that sort of thing....

The woman physician (played by Bae Doona from Sense8) Seo-bi, she is so very awesome but homg, she and that silly magistrate are gonna be fighting tooth and nail to get away.

I thought that Muyeong's wife (the Prince's guard) was the woman giving birth in the - last ep? The one who gave birth to a girl? Maybe I'm mistaken. I hope not! She didn't deserve whatever the hell the Queen's court did to that woman.

I am baffled and delighted at how tidy the Prince is, down to his hat almost never coming off (though I'd like to see his hair mussed). I really like the young 'peasant' guy who is the sharpshooter? But I cannot find his name anywhere, and no list of the cast gives a name for his character. I'll have to rewatch, heh. He is a very attractive young man.

Yessssss, that's where I recognized her from! And yeah she's great, very pragmatic but also kind. I kind of wanted to bop that magistrate on the head tbh because he's such a dummy, but he does have the potential to develop, he's got a kind heart under his dim-nature, he just needs to right people to bring it out I think. No love lost for those idiots he was with on the boat.

No, she hasn't given birth yet, that was another woman who had the girl. So it's definitely gonna be her that has the boy and they're gonna try and take him from her for the Queen. I just hope she can get out or get rescued because Muyeong is nice and she seems it too. :(

(I am so shit at the names in this tbh, I'll be able to remember Seo-Bi and that's it).

He is so proper, also a bit of a dick to begin with but he's heroic too and standing by the people, I like him. Actually I like all of them, even the sharpshooter who uh started all of this(he didn't know what would happen, his decision made-sense, even if it was pretty morbid and grim, but uh, yeah I imagine that's dwelling on his mind).

Ngl they're all nice to look at, which is a bonus to me as the actual plot is pretty engaging even without that.

Edit: I do love how the sharpshooter guy just bodily throws himself into people/things as well, he's just 100% down to fight and it's entertaining as heck.

She is! I loved her talk with the magistrate the first time, 'how is your urination? Do you have pain in your penis?' So straightforward and totally missing (deliberately or not) that he was trying to half-ass woo her.

He *could* be good, if he just tries. We shall see! I don't think they'll turn him into zombie-chow (hope not!).

Yes! He/his people had been forced to cannibalism in the past, so it was the logical thing. But yes - he's got this on his mind pretty heavily, I'm
sure. Poor guy - that sucks. And also, his village apparently was wiped out, too - sad hero! Heh.

The Prince is like Cap, his ideals and morals are the ones you want to take a stand with, not fight against. Unless you're the kind of person who can sink dozens of bodies into a lake.....

It's true, there is a lot of pretty to look at. Evil as she is, the Queen is super-pretty, and I love her hair sticks/hair dos. So elaborate (but wow, must be uncomfortable)!

That scene was fucking fantastic and I was cackling the whole way through! I can see it both ways tbh, she knows what he's doing and is deliberately fucking with him, or she's oblivious because who the fuck is giving a shit about wooing someone during this mess??

(The answer is him, because he's a dummy).

Yeah, that's why I can't quite dislike him because there is a good dude underneath his idiocy and inability to think for himself, so if he can get there he could be a great guy. But we'll see, he could devolve and I'll want him to be zombie-chow down the line.

He's had a pretty shit hand tbh, it's why I can't be super-mad at him because as gruesome as it was, it made sense. If you're starving you will eat anything, he could never have expected that it'd turn out like this because who the fuck knows about zombies right?

Yup, he's pretty hard and stern, but he will do the right thing. He's an interesting character and I do enjoy how he sticks to his word.

Her outfits are amazing, I always wonder in more historical(in a sense for this one) Eastern Asian dramas just how long it takes to get into those very elaborate costumes for about 5 mins of screen-time. Yeah I bet they aren't terribly nice to wear comfort-wise.

I think his wanting to protect her, and questioning fleeing in the ship shows he really *can* be good, so fingers crossed.

YES, i wonder, too, about the costumes and how much effort it takes just to be in them, walk in them, etc. I think it's incredibly interesting how it's apparently a 'thing' in Korea to do that one-loop tie, you know? Not a bow, with two loops, but a single loop. Men and women both use it, and it's still a thing today. I wonder about the origin of that....

My dad texted me last night, super excited and just saying "RUSSIAN DOLL WATCH IT NOW." I have absolutely no idea what it's about. I have a week off, so is it a binge-thing?

I would say so. There are eight eps, but they're only half an hour, I think? So only four hours total.

Same, I had the biggest grin on my face when I saw her. She's a gem. Not sure where it's going but I think I'm gonna enjoy it!
