What is something unexpected that happened to you?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2019-02-05 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
So my phone case has had a bump on the back for a while. I just assumed it was the case warping. Well, I decided to take it off last night to clean it and realized the bump was coming from inside the phone. Got the back off and realized the battery has SWOLLEN up. It is so swollen, that I could not get the back of the phone back on. I had to just stuff it all into the case.

So...I had to unexpectedly buy a phone last night. I had planned on upgrading for a while but not until I got my taxes back. But my phone is four years old and I don't want to catch on fire because I decided to wait a month to replace this ticking time bomb of a battery.

Anyone else have anything unexpected come up?

Is this a known thing that can happen with these phones? It sounds scary. I'd freak out.

Apparently! It has never happened to me before. I guess it can be caused from overcharging or just old battery or overheating.

I had the same thing happen with my MacBook. TBH I was told it was just a 'sometimes thing' that happens with lithium ion batteries.

Run a battery through enough charge cycles, it's going to happen. The only reason you see it in phones and laptops like MacBooks is because there isn't a solid case around the battery to keep the internals from puffing out, like the older laptops with an external battery. And with batteries being internal and not easily swappable, people aren't buying new batteries when they don't work as well, so they're being run until they start to popcorn.

I had to giggle at 'start to popcorn' but it's an apt description!

A lady with a toddler in a stroller came into my work and needed something that was on the 1st floor. When I said I'd go upstairs to get it for her, she said "No no no I'll get it, can you just watch her for a minute?" and parked the stroller by the counter and went off upstairs.

So I'm standing there looking at this toddler thinking "I am in charge of a small child, what if she starts crying, what do I do." I'm terrible with kids so I do this awkward smile and wave and the kid fucking beams and waves her arms around. We spend the next five minutes waving back and forth. When I raise my arms straight up she goes "YEAH YEAH!" and copies me. I was completely unprepared for it but she made my week.

...what a weird thing for someone to do! Did you know her at all?

No, never seen her before. D: It was weird. She could have let me go up or taken her out the stroller and carried her, but nope. I was terrified, like I saw a million potential bad things that could have happened and I would have felt responsible.

Even as someone who is great with kids, that would make me super awkward.

Ngl I'd call my supervisor asap and be like 'person left a kid but I don't get paid enough so I'll just continue my stocking k'

Agh! I've had the "hold onto my kid for a second, I'll be right back" thing happen to me more than once. At least usually they were in a stroller, but one time a woman handed off her fucking baby to me! I work at a craft store! I have scissors and other sharp things on my person! WHY ARE YOU HANDING ME A BABY

Is the battery replaceable? If it is, I highly recommend just buying a new battery, the rest of the phone should be fine. New phones all come with batteries you can't replace anymore, which annoys the hell out of me because I could make them last sooo much longer if it weren't for this capitalist planned-obsolescence bullshit. My current phone isn't going to last four years, much as I'd like it to. Hang on to replaceable batteries if you've got em!

It is replaceable but I am going to give the phone to my sister to use. Her current phone sucks.

Be warned, the touch screen may be funky now that the battery's puffed. I had it happen to an LG G5, with the replaceable battery. The touch sensor was all kinds of wonky and the display went all ghost-y around the edges.

It has been puffed for at least a few weeks. Once I get my new phone, I will toss the bad battery and give the old phone to my sister.

It's my first winter in my new house and the polar vortex taught me that my windows are pretty crap (ice on the inside!). I figured after they thawed and dryed I would put plastic over them, but realized there was no way to put it on over the blinds without removing not only the blinds, but the brackets that hold them (the top part sticks out too far and I'm afraid it would break the plastic) and there's no effective way to put plastic under the blinds. I figure it's not practical to remove the brackets unless I want to give up on shades completely since unscrewing them in the winter and screwing them back in come spring would result in an increasingly weaker hold. I'm putting up curtains on the windows in the coldest rooms and could put up plastic in the bathroom where there's no blinds, and then maybe try seasonal caulk next year.

My mom talked me down from a panic saying, "Well, it's not -20 that often. You get ice on your windows for a couple of days every 5 years but not the rest if the time then you are probably fine."

At least my house isn't too dry, I guess? (The unexpected consequence of owning an aquatic reptile.)

If you can, get them replaced when it is affordable. You will save so much on heating and cooling. You can also get window wrapping kits from hardware stores.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-05 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
The window wrapping is what I wanted to do, but the tops of the blinds stick out too far.

Not catching on fire is always the preferable option!
