It's more about fixating on true crime media so much that you forget that they are real brutal crimes and not an episode on SVU. Imagine asking someone what was their favourite episode of a true crime podcast? Gee, episode three had such a good case with all the mysterious details and stuff. Too bad for the victims, but that sure was an entertaining episode.

Do you get this up in arms when people talk about their favorite periods in history? Those also tend to involve a lot of real people and violence.

So, I mean, some of this varies based on what time period you're talking about - the more distant in the past, the harder it is to care - but I do think that if you study for instance the Vietnam War or Iraq War without understanding the human suffering and the moral and political dimensions of those conflicts, you're doing something wrong
