I mean, what's the point of an adaptation? To be faithful to the source material, or to be a good work that can stand on its own? I come down on the side of the latter every time.

Both. Some lean more towards one or the other, but the very best adaptions can accomplish both.

You could argue that up to a degree. If a character or characters deviate that much from canon, what's the point of making an adaptation instead of just calling it an original work?
