This is true (though the 1830s were the least fortunate decade of fashion in the modern era imo) but the book was published in 1813, so I always assumed it was set then

I was truly impressed with the TV show Victoria for not overwhelming the audience with the worst fashion trends of the day when it would have been *so* easy to do so.
