Hmm, I always took that dialogue as them moving the "expressed himself on the occasion as sensibly and as warmly as a man violently in love can be supposed to" part forward a bit. I didn't dislike it (though I wish his walk towards her had been a bit shorter) and there are other things I like a lot about that adaptation to make up for it. (I've never been able to bring myself to watch the US ending though.)
